Join our community and connect with malayalis residing in Penrith and surrounding suburbs
Penrith Malayali Koottayma (PMK) stands as a beacon of unity and cultural preservation within the Malayali diaspora. Rooted in a deep appreciation for tradition and community, PMK serves as a vital hub for Malayali individuals and families in the Penrith area and its surroundings.
Our vision is to foster a vibrant and inclusive Malayali community in Penrith and surrounding suburbs, where traditions are celebrated, connections are nurtured, and individuals thrive.
Our programs encompass a diverse range of initiatives aimed at enriching our community. These may include cultural celebrations, educational workshops, networking events, community service projects, and support services tailored to the needs of our members. We strive to offer a comprehensive array of programs that cater to various interests and contribute to the holistic development of our community.
As one of the oldest Malayali associations in Sydney, the Penrith Malayali Koottayma (PMK) has a rich and vibrant history that reflects the growth and unity of the Malayali community in Western Sydney.
In 2007, the landscape of Penrith's Malayali community began to change. A few newly arrived Malayalis joined the existing two or three families residing in the area and wanted to celebrate the rich traditions of Kerala. From these humble beginnings, the small group of families quickly grew into a close-knit community of 25 families.
The term "Koottayma," meaning a gathering or assembly in Malayalam, was suggested by one of the members, preferring it over the anglicized terms like association or organization. Thus, the Penrith Malayali Koottayma was born. The spirit of Koottayma was first seen in our inaugural Onam celebration, held in a small hall in Kingswood. The traditional Onam Sadya, a grand feast, was lovingly prepared by the members themselves in someone’s home the night before, showcasing our community's dedication and collaborative spirit.
From these early days, the essence of Koottayma thrived in every event. As the years passed, more Malayalis arrived in Sydney, and the Koottayma continued to grow, welcoming new members and expanding its reach.
Today, PMK is a dynamic and thriving community. Our last Onam event was a testament to this growth, with over 800 members in attendance. The Penrith Malayali Koottayma has become the association of choice not only for Malayalis in Penrith but also for those across Western Sydney.
Our journey from a small group of families to a robust community underscores the strength, unity, and cultural pride that defines the Penrith Malayali Koottayma. We continue to celebrate our heritage, support one another, and welcome new members with open arms, ensuring that the spirit of Koottayma lives on for generations to come.

With around 1,100 people in attendance, the event truly felt like a wonderful celebration of our culture. We would like to take a moment to remember and thank a few people who played a key role in making this event a success.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all PMK members for their ongoing support and participation in our events.
We are thrilled to announce the resounding success of the Penrith Vallam Kali event! The event saw 8 teams with a total of 160 rowers, competing with passion and sportsmanship, and it attracted an enthusiastic crowd of over 800 people.
The day was filled with cultural vibrancy, highlighted by the rhythmic beats of Chenda Mellam, the mesmerizing performance of Theyyam, and a music show that kept everyone entertained. The festive atmosphere was truly something to behold!
We sincerely thank everyone who participated, attended, and supported the event, making it a memorable celebration of our culture and community.
In a notable gesture of acknowledgment, Clr Karen McKeown extended gratitude towards PMK for our impactful Mother's Day event during a parliamentary session. Expressing appreciation for the recognition, representatives from PMK, Dynish Kurian (Secretary) and Rex Jose Pullan (PRO) conveyed their gratitude towards Clr Karen McKeown for her support and acknowledgment. The gesture not only underscores the significance of community-driven initiatives but also serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts between local organisations and governmental representatives in fostering community welfare.
